The Challenges of Maintaining a Fitness Plan as a New Dad
This past month, my wife and I welcomed our son into the world. It’s been the greatest blessing of my life, but also the most humbling transition I’ve ever experienced. As someone who has played football at the collegiate and semi-professional levels, competed in Crossfit and coached countless men on their fitness journeys, I thought I understood challenge and discipline—but becoming a dad has changed my perspective entirely, leading to the greatest paradigm shift yet. What I teach now doesn’t just come from research or coaching experience; it’s grounded in my own life, learning how to balance fitness with the demands of fatherhood.
One of the biggest challenges new dads face is sleep deprivation. Nights filled with feedings, diaper changes, and rocking your newborn back to sleep leave you running on fumes. Without adequate rest, energy levels plummet, making the idea of lifting weights or running miles far less appealing. Fatigue doesn’t just sap motivation—it also slows recovery, making consistent training harder to sustain.
On top of that, new dads are constantly juggling work and family responsibilities. Whether it’s meeting deadlines at the office or making sure you’re present for your partner and child, carving out time for yourself can feel selfish or unrealistic. This constant balancing act often means workouts are the first thing to get sacrificed.
The result is a cycle of low energy and reduced consistency. Even when time is available, many dads find themselves too drained to give 100% in the gym. Add in unpredictable nap schedules, last-minute errands, or extra household chores—and structure quickly unravels.
Still, this season has reinforced for me why fitness matters so deeply. It’s not about chasing numbers on a barbell—it’s about building the strength, resilience, and energy to show up for your family. That’s the lesson I’ll be carrying into my coaching: training smarter, not harder, so we can thrive in the lives we’re called to lead.
In the weeks ahead, I’ll be sharing practical strategies for new dads to maximize their limited time, including:
Time-efficient workouts that deliver results in 20–30 minutes.
Smart recovery habits to counteract sleep deprivation and stress.
Flexible nutrition tactics that fit into unpredictable days.
Stay tuned—because if there’s one thing I’m learning, it’s that fitness as a dad isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency, creativity, and grace for the season you’re in.
